Did you try resetting the ECU? Sometimes that helps.

That'll buff right out.

Reminds me of the time a very worn out Robin water pump engine tried to kill me that way. Chunks whistling by and leaving a grease slick in my hair.

You finished the race, though, right? I mean, it's not like all 4 cylinders exploded!

Wtf! How does this even happen?
![]() 07/29/2014 at 12:46 |

Nope, Robin as in this:
Formerly Robin-Wisconsin, it's a division of Fuji Heavy Industries alongside Subaru.
![]() 07/29/2014 at 13:04 |

Ah, thank you for clarifying. Does Robin sell their engines to various manufacturers who stick their own labels on them, or are they just higher end than I'm used to seeing?
I was trying to imagine someone deliberately racing a Reliant Robin and hilarity (and incredulity) ensued. :-)

Apparently they aren't even sold as "Robin" anymore, but as Subaru. They were sold as Robin up until fairly recently, though. Not very high quality, possibly best seen as about the same level as Briggs intermediate industrial stuff, maybe a couple grades below honda.

How did the rod journal look. Bearing failure first or pure rod breakage? Who's rod?
![]() 07/29/2014 at 13:12 |

Thanks! You learn something new every day. :-)

Carnage! I'm guessing the wristpin tore through the con rod and that's when the fun happened?

Thats a very nice new ventilation hole you've got there. Plus it looks custom.

It was in the R2 Fiesta we raced at Mt Washington. Technically it started with a valve breaking and trying to race on three cylinders, don't know the order of failure after that. I'm not the one who took the engine apart.
![]() 07/29/2014 at 14:45 |
|
First the valve snapped, so we tried to race it on three cylinders because Troy needed the points, then it asploded. Don't know details beyond that, I didn't do the engine teardown.
![]() 07/29/2014 at 14:46 |
|
Well, first you need to lose a valve, then you need to try to run the engine full throttle up a mountain looking like this.
![]() 07/29/2014 at 15:20 |
|
ok, usually when a rod breaks it's usually the Bearing that goes first and the rod tries to weld itself to the journal. The rod may have just snapped, but let me know if you need help putting it back together. I'm with Wiseco piston and we have a sister company by the name of K1 that may have a rod for you.

Due to vehicle rules we have to run M-Sport parts in the engine. The car is fixed and back out kicking ass.

It's the shipping costs that really hurt. They have to be shipped from M-Sport to an M-Sport licensed distributor (there are only two in the U.S.), then from distributor to customer.
